How to Run a Business Instead of Letting It Run You

Minifortunes @ 7:14 am

One of the primary reasons why you are thinking of running a business is because you like to enjoy the freedom it brings. You can have more control of your income or profit, you can have more time for yourself and loved ones, you can basically employ techniques and strategies that are entirely your own, and you don’t have to strap yourself to a nine to five job.

However, if you aren’t too careful, you can become gullible, allowing your business to slowly eat you up. When this happens, stress and burnout will start to set in. The time you’re looking for is not already there, and you could probably lose your motivation. Simply put, you don’t end up becoming an effective businessperson.

To make sure that you end up the owner and not an employee of your own business, learn to apply the following tips:

1. Hire someone to do things for you. Even if it’s your own business, you don’t need to do everything all on your own. You can look for some people who can help you out. You can even start at your own household. Perhaps you can train your daughter how to do online marketing. You may ask a brother to help you with your shipping. It may not be much, but the help can definitely go a long way.

2. Outsource projects. There are thousands of talented writers, virtual assistants, data encoders, bookkeepers, SEO specialists, web designers—the list goes on—in the World Wide Web today; and their services would not cost you a lot. You can employ these service providers, have some tasks work on by them, and get great quality in return. What’s more, you don’t get to spend too much for your salaries.

3. Come up with your own set of goals. Don’t ever think that a business plan is only fitting for those who have huge businesses. As a matter of fact, it is highly recommended for those who are starting out. Through this, you will be able to establish your goals and the methods that you need to apply in order to achieve them. Having this with you will prevent you from going off track and pursuing tasks and projects that will not produce results.

4. Manage your cash flow properly. Money will always be a cause of headache in business, and it will only get worse when you don’t have it. Effective cash flow management is thus extremely essential. Always design a budget that is feasible, measurable, and possible. It must be something that you can follow. Don’t spend on anything that you don’t need and that could be too much. Look for ways on how you can minimize costs, perhaps on overhead and advertising.

Split Testing Ads Made Easy

Minifortunes @ 10:51 am

If you’re running ads to promote your business, then you must know by now that it’s not enough that you create and publish them in search engines and their distribution channels. You must also determine if they’re going to work—that is, it can generate higher click-through rates and sales conversion for your business.

But how do you exactly measure the success of your ads? One excellent way is through split testing ads.

What is a split test ad?

Normally, with Google ads, for example, you don’t only come up with a single ad. You can produce as many as you can, usually in groups, depending on the keywords that you’re using. Split testing is running two slightly different ads together, where one can be your control copy—the one that you modify to see if the changes implemented can somehow have some good effect on your click-through.

What is the benefit of doing this?

The main reason why you would want to do a split test ad is to check if the modifications that you’re going to apply for an ad will increase your chances of getting clicked by your target audience. When this happens, it will definitely boost your sales conversion rate too. You can also easily distinguish which ads may not be performing really well in the long run, and so you can apply the necessary changes or eventually remove them from your ad campaign.

How do you do a split test ad?

Split testing your ads can be through its landing pages or the ads themselves. Here are the steps on how to do it:

1. Create an account. The first thing you need to do is to create an account where you can easily manage your ads. For instance, if you’re using Google Adwords, you simply need to sign up, which basically doesn’t take more than 30 minutes.

2. Create the two ads. If you are going to test the ad itself, there are two ads that you need to work on. The first one will be called the test ad. This will be the one where changes are made, usually with the keyword used. The other is the control copy, where there will be no modification. For your landing page, come up with 2 different URLs for your landing page.

3. Track and analyze results. For a certain period of time, monitor the performance of your ads. Do some tweaking, in order to maximize the split testing.

Writing Compelling Sales Copy

Minifortunes @ 6:38 am

With all the focus on passive income and easy money on the internet, many entrepreneurs have forgotten the art of writing good sales copy. The good old-fashioned sales pitch is still the most effective way to get your customers to part with their money. Here are some suggestions:

1. Know what your customers want. The sales copy is not intended for you—it’s for your customers. If you want to sell, make sure that you can give them what they want. To help you visualize it, try to place yourself on the customers’ shoes and ask yourself, “What’s in it for me?” Unless you can come up with a specific answer, you may have never really known your customers too well, and thus, you will not possibly tickle their fancy and attract their attention, no matter how well-written your sales copy can be.

2. State the benefits, not the features. The features could be those that make your product unique from those offered by your competitors. But this is not really what your customers will be looking for. They want to know how your offer can be beneficial to them. What do they get from it? If the answer is none, it could be your selling the wrong product, or you’re talking to the wrong people.

3. Make sure the copy is pleasant to read. It could be too small that you would even care about it, but formatting does matter. Nobody would want to read an overcrowded page or a sales copy with a lot of jargons. Of course, they would question your professionalism and credibility for every grammatical and spelling mistake that they can find in your press release. So why don’t you spend some time checking how your copy looks like before you start sending them? Keep in mind that once they’re out of your hands or sent to the mailboxes of your customers, you can’t get them back.

4. Offer them something that they cannot refuse. “Free” is a strong word, especially if you like to entice customers to at least check out what you can possibly offer to them. Thus, get ready for some bonuses that you can give out. They can be free e-books, articles, or reports.

5. Make a guarantee and stick to it. End your sales copy with a promise that you know you can keep. If you say that there is a money-back guarantee, if they’re not satisfied, ensure that you return it to them. If you say the product can give them results in 7 days, make sure that it does.

How Google’s Cache Can Hurt Your Cashflow

Minifortunes @ 7:53 am

Take a closer look at Google search results and you will notice that small blue underlined word that says “Cached.” It means that Google spiders had paid attention to your old content and have placed them in an archive. This way, Internet users will still be able to access your pages, even if they are no longer available at your present website.

Initially, it sounds like a great idea. You know that your readers will still have another way of getting information from your website, especially if you’ve deliberately changed it. Moreover, it means that your pages are really getting indexed by Google and that you have the best chance to improve your page ranks.

The Disadvantages of Google Cache

However, Google cache has its own disadvantages, which may hurt the reputation of your business:

1. Internet users can access old and un-updated files. Just when a customer thinks that he is getting his iPod at less than a hundred dollars, he may definitely be surprised to realize a credit card charge worth more than 150 dollars. This is because he could be viewing an old price list, which has been already cached.

2. You could be sharing the wrong facts. This usually happens when you’ve changed a lot of important information in your website, such as your contact details. Customers may not be able to reach you since they are busy sending messages to wrong e-mail addresses and dialing the wrong numbers. In the end, you’re losing what could have been an addition to your customer base.

3. The webpage may not appear so well-designed. Google cache cannot actually index images, only text. You still need to store your images to some another program, or you can have your CSS hosted externally. When this sheet is already gone, or you may have already deleted the image, Internet users may be seeing a distorted webpage. It could contain just small and big boxes, where images used to belong.

4. It can be hacked. Google cache can be easily hacked, and the thought of someone hacking into your old information can definitely give you a premonition of what else these people can do to your website. After all, they can actually play around with your old webpages.

Nevertheless, there’s a remedy, and it’s through your meta tag. If there are pages that you don’t want to be archived, you can simply instruct the Google spider to index your pages but not allow anyone to see it. The command is found below:

<meta name=”robots” content=”noarchive” />

LLC, Sole Proprietorship, Corporation: Selecting a Business Structure

Minifortunes @ 8:46 pm

There are different kinds of business organizations today, and they differ in terms of structure, advantages, and disadvantages. Knowing which type you’d like to adapt will determine legal procedures, processes in your business, and the people you’ll possibly deal with.

Sole Proprietorship

Of all the types of business organizations, this is the simplest—you simply have to work on your own. There are times when family members or relatives will help out, but the overall seer of the business will be you. You will also be the one to enjoy the returns of the business. This is highly preferred by some because of it’s very easy to setup, and if you no longer want to pursue the business, you can conveniently dissolve it without having to answer any partner. However, unless you’re willing to start small, this can be risky. Besides taking charge of all major functions like marketing, business administration, and finance, you will also shoulder losses on your own. The majority of businesses that file bankruptcy are those who are into sole proprietorship.

Partnership

There are two kinds of partnerships: general and limited. The former is basically similar to sole proprietorship in the sense that creditors can still run after your personal assets. Profits will also be reported into your own tax return. The only difference is that you have a partner who will be sharing profits and losses with you. With limited partnership, the business is treated as a different entity from the persons. Thus, when it comes to liabilities, creditors can only come after the assets that belong to the business. In general, partnership is an excellent venture if you need someone to help you out with your capital, and you need support in the business. However, at the early portion of the business, roles should be properly identified and designated to avoid conflict in the future.

Corporations

Corporation is the most complex of all business structures. It’s normally composed of 5 to 15 people, who would be pooling resources and sharing profits and losses of the business. There are a number of forms that need to be filled out, and taxation is completely different and more complicated when it comes to corporations. However, corporations have greater success in business since there are several people helping together. With a very huge capital they can put up, they can immediately strengthen their marketing efforts and come up with the much-needed technology and people.

LLC (Limited Liability Company)

A relatively new type of business structure, the LLC or Limited Liability Company has gained popularity in recent years. It is easy to see why, because it combines the simplicity of a sole proprietorship or partnership with the protection of a corporation. You can choose pass-through tax, or be taxed as a corporation, depending on your needs. If the company is sued or goes bankrupt, your personal assets are protected. The major downside for businesseses just starting up is that LLCs in some states are subject to an annual minimum state tax ($800 in California).

Social Networking and You: How to Use Myspace and Facebook to Your Advantage

Minifortunes @ 1:35 pm

Myspace, Facebook, Friendster, Hi-Five, Squidoo—name it! There are just so many social networking websites that it’s almost impossible to discover a person who doesn’t have at least one account in any of these places. Besides the fact that it removes boredom and is a very fun thing to do, you can build contacts and find new and old friends in the network.

However, do you know that you can also use them to improve your business? Social networking websites are actually a great source of traffic and search engine rankings through inbound links. Most of all, there are plenty of leads and ideal customers that are just lurking in the social networking websites.

Here are some tips on how make them work out for you:

1. Add easy-to-share media files. A lot of these social networking websites permit you to add a video, mp3 file, or even a podcast into your profile. You can have these media files hosted externally and then embed the codes to your social networking profile. It’s definitely a great idea if you can make it sharable. This way, your contacts will be able to add the same thing to their own accounts.

2. Make use of icons and other images. Who doesn’t love to add those cutesy and glittering icons and letters into their profiles? They just simply add more life to their own page. Even men do that. You can bank on its popularity by creating icons and images for your website and subsequently giving them to your contacts for free.

3. Choose your social networking sites well. For a start, you can join as many as you can, just to get a general fee of each website. However, when you’re ready to go full blast, learn to focus your energy to at most two or three of them. This way, you don’t end up feeling spent, and you can really concentrate your marketing efforts properly. You can judge your decision based on the total number of members there are in the website, the features that you can readily use, as well as the receptiveness of the members to business profiles like yours.

4. Participate in groups and discussions. Groups give you an avenue to not only advertise your business but also build your reputation as an authority to your chosen niche. You can start by answering questions, posting informative articles, or simply talking about anything new about the industry you’re in. As a new member, it takes a while for people to warm up, so a short but nice hello can already go a long way.

Search Engine Optimization: A Guide for Beginners

Tags:
Minifortunes @ 8:02 am

Learning how to optimize your website is a must for everyone who wants to do online marketing. However, you don’t need to be a technical genius or even a certified programmer to be able to accomplish this.

Here’s a rough guide for SEO beginners:

1. Build your links. There are two great benefits you can derive from link development. First you can increase your rankings in search engines. Second, you can drive traffic into your website.

There are different ways on how you can build your links. You can look for related websites and establish partnerships with their webmasters, or you can stick with the simplest and the most effective one: one-way linking.

With one-way link, the main thrust is to bring inbound links into the different webpages of your website. Every unique URL is then counted as one vote of confidence for your page. Thus, if you have plenty, it means that your website can be trusted by search engines.

2. Add a sitemap. A sitemap is essential to ensure that your webpages will be visited by search engine spiders frequently. When they do, then even your new pages and even articles can easily be indexed. One good sitemap is the one from Google. It has its own user-friendly interface, which makes it easier for you to integrate it to your site.

3. Include original and well-written articles. Articles are one of the driving forces for your website. This is because Internet users love to gather information. Make sure that you can populate your pages with them. However, you have to watch out for two grave mistakes: keyword stuffing and plagiarism. The former entails the use of keywords too many times all over the article, making it appear unnatural. You should know that Google doesn’t really like unnatural pages. Plagiarism, on the other hand, is a serious offense where contents with no proper reference come from previously published materials. This can be punishable by law. Both these offenses may cause you to experience consequences like getting penalized or, worst, banned by search engines.

4. Constantly read updates and tutorials on SEO. Today there are already several websites and blogs that are focused on teaching Internet users about SEO. You can subscribe to them, have them bookmarked, or read them as often as you can. SEO rules change a lot, and it’s important that you can keep up with it.

Making Your Business Look Bigger

Minifortunes @ 9:35 am

You know what they say: size does not really matter. This is especially true when you are in business. It does not necessarily mean that having a hundred employees will spell success, in the same way that working alone does not guarantee failure. The most important thing is you know how to apply the different business strategies well to your advantage.

For someone operating a small-scale business, here are some ways on how to make it look bigger for your customers:

1. Build your contacts. Association will always play a role when it comes to persuading your customers to patronize you. Thus, as early as now, start building your contacts and get associated to a number of well-meaning organizations. For example, you can always have your business checked with Business Bureau, one of the highly recognized company-checking authorities in the United States. You can also scour for trade associations within your area.

2. Answer questions and issues using your company e-mail address. It does pay to have your own company e-mail. Besides the fact that you can prevent these company-related issues from getting mixed with your personal letters, you can also establish professionalism in how you correspond to your customers. There are a lot of web hosting companies that can give you at least 1 e-mail address. You can take advantage of that.

3. Build a website. A website can function in different ways. It can serve as your showroom, a portal for your customers to visit for updates and more information, as well as a method of bringing your business closer to them. You can create an About Us page, where you can list your achievements or the things that you can do or offer to your Internet visitors.

4. Add an address. There are a number of home-based business owners that would often deliberately remove addresses into their contact details. After all, they are just working at the comforts of their own home. However, adding one will actually boost your level of professionalism since customers would have an idea that your business is really real.

5. Get yourself listed in phone directories. Do not rely all your marketing efforts to the Internet. After all, there are still a lot who don’t use it. For those potential customers who are not so Internet-friendly, you can list your business to your local telephone directory. Don’t worry, it will never cost you a lot.

Blogging for Money: 5 Steps That Are Truly Easy to Follow

Minifortunes @ 9:34 am

So you have a blog. Do you earn something from it? If you don’t, then you’re one of the few who didn’t use it to its fullest potential. Indeed, there’s wealth in blogging, especially if you know how to play the cards right.

Here are 5 of the many enumerable ways to earn decent income through blogging:

1. Add Adsense into your blog. This is one of the oldest and the most classic. The process is simple. You simply need to setup a blog in Blogger.com and then, using some codes, add Adsense ads into your account. You earn every time somebody clicks on your ad. It’s going to be a no-sweat, earn-money-conveniently mode for you. However, it’s important that you learn some Adsense tricks to enhance the click-ability of your ads. A lot of blog readers are too tired and annoyed by them.

2. Write product reviews. Are you superb in detailing every benefit and disadvantage of a particular product or service? Now is the time to put it to good use. You can transform your blog into a mini-product review website. You can scour for new products in the market, look for contact information of the seller, and then offer your services. Just don’t go too high with your rates to avoid discouraging them. If you’re lucky, you can even have free sample of the product.

3. Compose mini-blog posts for advertisers. PayperPost, Smorty, and BuyblogReviews are some of the websites that offer the blogs of their members to advertisers. The latter, meanwhile, will either look for bidders or bloggers to write anything about their business or product. A very short blog post, running around 200 words, can already earn you as much as $20.

4. Show affiliate banners. Affiliate programs can allow you to earn commission every time you make a sale, drive a customer into their website, or refer someone to become an affiliate. There are banners, HTML and text, that you can easily add to your blog. Each time a visitor clicks on the ad and then purchases a product or becomes a new member, you earn.

5. Build your portfolio. Blogs are now considered as essential tools for freelance writers these days. This is because it can be a very good venue to build their portfolio. You can add your resume, write articles covering a variety of topics, or simply showcase your writing ability. You may not earn something directly from your blog, but you’ll be indirectly earning for a very long time.
